Soaring Bird Earrings, Large Art Jewelry Earrings with Mookaite and Picasso Jasper
The patterning in these beautiful matched-pair Mookaite Jasper cabochons inspired the design setting. I was seeing a bird soaring in a gorgeous red & yellow sunset. To complement this idea, I chose a setting that suggests looking through tree branches and added a mirror-imaged pair of saw-cut sterling silver birds and a pair of Picasso Jasper cabochons with tone-on-tone black/grey patterning that reminds me of tree branches at night.
I embossed a botanical pattern to a sheet of sterling silver and used this for the back side of the custom bezel setting for the Mookaite Jasper. I surrounded the Mookaite stones with twisted wire onto which I forged tiny leaves on the ends. To make the leaves, I melted the ends of pieces of sterling wire into a ball then hammered a tiny integral leave from the ball. The setting has been patina'd, and then the highlights polished.
These hang from a stud post on the Picasso Jasper stones and arrive with an oversized ear nut made from plastic and sterling silver.
Measures 3 1/8" from the top of the earrings to the bottom of the dangle, 2 3/4" from the stud post to the bottom of the dangle, and 5/8" wide. The circle around the saw-cut birds measures 1/2" in diameter.
