Statement from Linda Smith:

Since learning to play with glass, there has been no looking back for me. Previously I concentrated on original design quilts, so frequently quilt like elements will show up in my work. I am also highly influenced by colors and textures in nature. Birds are a frequent source of inspiration as are plants and flowers. Water and sunsets crop up too since we have those in abundance in the Tampa Bay area.

I am largely self taught. I have an extensive library of design books- both for quilts and mosaics (and have read even more). My style can vary but rarely resembles traditional mosaics that are made up of all similar size pieces. In most of my designs, I like to vary the size of the pieces in different areas to add interest and movement to the mosaic.

When planning a mosaic, I start with a sketch. From there, I work out scale and colors and decide on shape treatment for each element of the mosaic. I strive for detail in my work. Consistent grout lines are important to me even in crazy paving areas. Unless the design seems to say otherwise, I will keystone the pieces to make them fit better in circular areas. I like to have neatly finished edges and sealed backs. Most of my pieces have some type of wood trim but sometimes I will finish edges with matching glass or even copper.

Durability of my mosaics is important to me. All wood substrates are sealed, front and back. For mosaics intended for outdoors or humid areas, the substrate will usually be concrete backer board and all hardware for hanging will be stainless steel or brass.
